Have you ever heard the phrase, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life,” and thought that it’s impossible? Well, then we have a man here at Ople who is doing the impossible. Meet our Lead Data Scientist Gilberto Titericz, or Giba, who loves data science and does data science every day.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I studied Electrical Engineering and worked in that field at global companies like Siemens and Petrobras before actually diving into Data Science. It was in 2008 when I started to learn different machine learning techniques. In the beginning, the goal was to improve my personal stock market gains. It wasn’t until 2012 that I started to really get into the field.
Sounds interesting. What was the journey like in studying data science?
My first competition was the Google AI Challenge. I have competed in numerous competitions on Kaggle since then. It was more of a hobby, but a serious one, so I participated in as many challenges as I can and read many papers to become better at data science. What was very interesting to me about data science is that there’s just so much to learn and discover. I sometimes joke that data science or machine learning gives me super powers because I am able to find solutions that were not even recognizable before. By using data, I am uncovering challenges and solutions and that’s really fun.
What’s so fun and interesting about data science to you?
Working in data science lets you analyze and experience all kinds of data processing, visualization, and machine learning algorithms. In other words, you have to be able to take a look at the data in different ways first to see what you can do, then start training different algorithms to solve your particular challenge. The most interesting part for me is this training algorithms part. I love trying different ways to improve model accuracy.
How does that excitement translate to your role as the Lead Data Scientist at Ople?
My role as the Lead Data Scientist at Ople is to provide the analysis and algorithms to make AI possible. I have been participating in all kinds of competitions and worked with different groups of people, so I am bringing my knowledge to help the team find the best AI solution to solve generic machine learning problems as fast, reliable, and precise as possible. This means that I also have to work very closely with the engineering team to show them the right machine learning paths.
What do you like to do for fun?
I like participating in Kaggle competitions and writing machine learning algorithms.
Other than data science-related activities, please?
Well, in that case, I like playing video games. I was once a hardcore video gamer and participated in one of the e-sports competitions. Nowadays, I play for fun and the latest addition to my gaming hobby is the PS VR set. I haven’t found a very good VR game yet, but I am playing different demo VR games to find the one that I would really like to play.
I also like spending time with my family. It’s a blessing to be given an opportunity to watch children grow as a father, and I am enjoying every second I spend with them.
Do you have a favorite quote?
My favorite quote is “There ain’t no such thing as free lunch.” I like using this quote to remind myself that you have to work for your achievements. Many people approach me with a misconception that things come easily to me. In short, no. I have been working very hard since I was 17 years old to be able to pursue what I love. You must work to get something. There is no way around it, ever.
